Haiti aims to bounce back as major tourist destination in the Caribbean

Up until the mid 1980’s, Haiti was one of the major tourist destinations in the Caribbean.  Tourists flocked to the waterfront area of Port-au-Prince.  However, political instability, corruption and natural disasters over the past couple decades have dragged the beautiful island off the Caribbean tourism map.  Now it is determined to bounce right back.

In the past few years, Haiti has seen a large boost in tourism and lodging development.  According to data published by the World Bank (figure below), Haiti tourism industry is up more than 500% from 2006.  Some of the hotels and resorts opened in the past couple years include Occidental Royal Oasis,  Marriott, Best western and Royal Decameron.
